Sullivan’s Island Police Go Green With New Squad Vehicle Tomberlin E-Merge -SS Electric Vehicle Donated for Island Enforcement

 Sullivan’s Island, S.C.- April 2, 2009-The police on one of Charleston’s barrier islands are putting the ‘green light’ on a new crime fighting vehicle. Two local companies are donating a new class of vehicle called a Low Speed Vehicle to the Sullivan’s Island Police Department for use on patrol. Palmetto Custom Carts and EcoSense Global Rentals are donating the LSV so that police will now have an electric car that is street legal.
“We’re excited about the new E-merge for our force,” says Sullivan’s Island Police Chief Danny Howard, “This vehicle is equipped with lights, seat belts and proper safety equipment that makes it street safe, and street legal for our officers.”
“Donating the LSV to the police just makes sense,” according to Hal Martens of EcoSense Global Rentals. “The force wants to expand their effort towards going green and our new E-merge lets the officers drive an electric vehicle around the clock. This is not just another golf car.”
The police car can easily be converted to a hybrid. “With a combination of electric motor and generator the car can easily do a 180 miles on 1 gallon of gas”, says Erick Boyance, President of Palmetto Custom Carts.
The Tomberlin E-merge is a serious Street Legal alternative form of transportation. With top speed of 25 mph and a range of over 30 miles, the E-Merge is a new class of vehicle for driving to work or around the neighborhood. It has an onboard charger so 110v socket is all that is needed to charge the vehicle. High Thyme, a local restaurant on Sullivans Island, has already installed a plug-in for LSV’s.
“We’re very glad to offer the E-Merge to the force,” says Erick. “Customizing it to fit the needs of the police department was a new challenge, and we think it will stand out for the people on the island, hopefully their first viewing won’t be in the rear view mirror.”
The Sullivan’s Island Police Department will unveil their newest crime fighting vehicle Thursday April 9th at 11:00 a.m. at the department headquarters 1610 Middle Street.
